The purpose of this research project is to gather data about illegal disconnections from electricity services by electricity distribution companies in Nigeria since the total privatisation of the Electricity Supply Industry in 2013.
This is a research project being conducted by RecovaDebt Limited, Ojoko & Ojoko (Solicitors) and The EiE Project LTD/GTE.
You are invited to participate in this research project because you are a customer of an electricity distribution company and a consumer of electricity services in Nigeria.
Your participation in this research study is voluntary. You may choose not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey, you may withdraw at any time. If you decide not to participate in this study or if you withdraw from participating at any time, you will not be penalized.
The procedure involves filling an online survey that will take approximately 10 minutes. Your responses will be confidential. We collect identifying information such as your name, email address, physical address, phone number, EDC meter/account number, etc.
The survey questions will be about instances of disconnection of your premises from electricity service supply, the circumstances surrounding such disconnections and potential financial exposure of your distribution company to you because of such disconnections.
We will do our best to keep your information confidential. All data is stored in a password protected electronic format. The results of this study will be used for:
1. estimating the contingent liabilities of each electricity distribution company to its customers because of repeated breaches of the Connection and Disconnection Procedures from Electricity Services 2007;
2. advocacy to the electricity distribution companies to adhere to best practices and compliance with extant regulations;
3. recommendations to policy-makers on deterrence measures against illegal disconnections;
4. exploring and exploiting avenues for regulatory or other intervention to redress customers against past or future non-compliance by electricity distribution companies with the provisions of the Connection and Disconnection Procedures from Electricity Services 2007;
and may be shared with other stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Services Industry such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, your electricity distribution company, etc.
